Keeny, Piotrowski Dip Under Hereford Course Record By Mary Albl of DyeStat It was a day for records at the Maryland State Cross Country Championships, sometimes referred to as the "toughest three miles in cross country." South River senior Sam Keeny led six runners to under 16 minutes as he won the 4A state title in a time of 15 minutes, 34.98 seconds, breaking the Hereford course of 15:43. Runner-up Tanner Piotrowski of Arundel also finished under the record in 15:42.44. Severna Park, ranked No. 21 nationally, won the program's third straight state title, placing three in the top seven. In the girls 4A race, Walter Johnson senior Jenna Goldberg ran the fastest time of the day in 17:50.47, just missing the course record of 17:49.38 set in 2016 by Maria Coffin. Howard High put three girls in the top 10 to win the championship with 69 points. A move up to 3A proved to be easy work for River Hill's Anish Nanjappa as the 2018 2A cham, won the 3A title in a time of 15:45.64, and led his team to a state title. In the girls 3A, Northern-Calvert's Oakley Olson led her team to a state title, winning the race in 18:49.23. Northern Calvert won the team title over Bel Air, 82-86. Senior Kyle Lund led Oakdale to a 2A state title, winning the race in 15:47.76. In girls 2A, Liberty won its first state title since 2014, scoring 44 points. Freshman Erin McQuitty from Middletown won the race in 19:06.75. Zane Chalker of Williamsport won the 1A race by nearly a minute, clocking 16:00.47. Williamsport had all five runners in the top 21 to win the team title with 49 points. Junior Daylie Younker of Smithsburg claimed the girls 1A individual title in 20:26.13. Northern Garrett edged out Brunswick 40-45 to win the team crown.
